Reduced weight limits on bridges

The following bridges have reduced weight limits until further notice.

  • Wakeman Road bridge between River Run and Prairie Corners Road now has a weight limit of 15 T
  • Rambadt Road bridge between M-86 and Truckenmiller Road now has weight limits of 42T/62T/82T
  • Jacksonburg Road bridge between Simpson and Covey Roads now has weight limits of 42T/54T/64T
  • S. Fisher Lake Road bridge between Carpenter and Buckhorn Roads now has weight limits of 20T/24T/40T

 

  • Nottawa Road bridge between Taylor and Kirby Roads, just north of Mendon now has weight limits of 33T/55T/71T

2022 Recipients

Chris J. Minger – Chris worked his way up through the ranks starting as a part-time employee to becoming the Director of Engineering, and eventually named the Managing Director at the time of your retirement after 44 years with the St. Joseph County Road Commission. Chris worked diligently over the years on many projects including two huge renovations to the Covered Bridge, plowed snow, worked in the testing lab, fabrication welding, mechanic work and survey work. Chris worked tirelessly with Board Members, staff, Township officials and community members during this time.

Cheryl E. Arver – Cheryl was the Clerk of Board for the Road Commission Board at the St. Joseph County Road Commission for many years. She worked diligently regarding road commission business including a vast knowledge of ACT 51 laws and a very progressive road construction phase of St. Joseph County. She worked tirelessly with Board Members, staff, Township officials and community members during this time.

Michael J. Elliott – Michael was an Assistant Engineer at the St. Joseph County Road Commission for many years working closely with Bruce Jones. He worked diligently to assure proper completion of all projects and filled in when Bruce Jones was on vacation and never let the crew pull anything over on him that Bruce wouldn’t have allowed had he been there.  Michael worked tirelessly with Board Members, staff, Township officials and community members during this time.

2021 Recipients

Bruce M. Jones -Bruce Jones was the acting Engineer/Superintendent/Manager of the St. Joseph County Road Commission during the major construction phase of this institution.  Mr. Jones worked tirelessly with Board Members, staff, Township officials and community members during this time.

D.W. Arney – D.W. was an acting Board Member/Chairman of the St. Joseph County Road Commission from 1960 to 1980 and worked tirelessly with fellow Board Members, Staff, Township Officials and community members during this time.

Frank J. Shellenbarger – Frank was an acting Board Member/Chairman of the St. Joseph County Road Commission from 1967 to 1990 and worked tirelessly with fellow Board Members, Staff, Township Officials and community members during this time.

 

St. Joseph County Road Commission Recognition Award Policy

Mission: In cooperation with county and township governments, the mission of the St. Joseph County Road Commission is to provide a well-maintained road system for the traveling public while enhancing economic development, tourism and specifically the overall quality of life for our customers, the citizens of St. Joseph County.

 In recognition of their noteworthy and significant contributions to the mission of the St. Joseph County Road Commission the Board wishes to acknowledge individuals who have had a lasting impact on this mission.

  1. Purpose. To provide specific guidelines, nomination requirements, timelines, and procedures for the Board of Road Commissioners Award Recognition Program.
  2. Background: On January 6, 2021, the St. Joseph County Road Commission Board agreed to establish the Recognition Award program to recognize individuals who represent the best of the St. Joseph County Road Commission by demonstrating both professional and personal dedication. No Road Commission funds will be used now or in the future and all associated costs will be funded by individual Board members.
  3. Eligibility: The award recognizes individuals who best represent the dedicated professionals serving our road commission. The candidate is typified by superior performance, county impact, mission contribution, leadership, dedication, and outstanding professionalism. The Board recognizes that there are individuals not employed by the road commission that have made great contributions to the improvement of the roads in St. Joseph County. When reviewing candidates for selection, additional consideration should be given to those individuals who have excelled in increasingly demanding, challenging, and unique accomplishments which embodies the St. Joseph County Road Commission vision.
  4. Action. The award cycle will run from January 1st to December 31st every year. Any person can complete a nomination form, submitted in the recommended format, by 3:00 pm February 15th to the Human Resources Manager. The Road Commission Board will complete the process by reviewing all nominations and voting for 3 candidates at the March public meeting each year.
  5. Recognition. The nominees selected by the designated Road Commissioners will receive:

a) Letter of Recognition. The St. Joseph County Road Commission Recognition Award will include an official letter of recognition, on St. Joseph County Road Commission letterhead, individually signed                  by each current appointed Road Commissioner and member of management.

b) Press Release. The Board Chairman will prepare a brief statement of the Boards appreciation and description of the individual’s accomplishments and give it to the press covering the Board meeting.                The recipient will be recognized on SJCRC’s Facebook page and will be added to a list of previous recipients on SJCRC’s website.

c) The St. Joseph County Road Commission Chairman or their designee will present awardee information to the County Commission Board at the next available public meeting. The information                              presented will also include the name of the individual and a brief description of accomplishment(s) which resulted in award recognition.

d) Perpetual Plaque. Each awardee will have their name included on a plaque including the year in which they were recognized in a conspicuous place within the Road Commission board room.

About St. Joseph County Road Commission, Centreville, Michigan

St. Joseph County has approximately 521 square miles with a population of 62,000 people. Within St. Joseph County public road system there are 828 miles of paved roads and 195 miles that are graveled. The St. Joseph County Road Commission has the responsibility for the construction and maintenance of all 1023 miles of these public roads and the 97 bridges located within the road system. The county is approximately 24 miles wide by 22 miles deep with the headquarters situated in the middle of the county in Centreville.  At the direction of the townships, the Road Commission also constructs and improves county local roads.

Major trunk lines, maintained by MDOT, include: US-12, M-60, M-66, M-86, M-103, M-216 and US-131.

The work of the St. Joseph County Road Commission includes not only snow removal and road repair, but also the upgrading and building of new and existing roads to current standards.
